Neurodivergence
Neurodivergence refers to individuals whose cognitive abilities are outside of the norm. A common characteristic of neurodivergence is having a spiky profile — where someone’s abilities vary significantly across different areas. For example, a person might excel in creative problem-solving or pattern recognition while finding executive functioning tasks, like time management or organisation, more challenging. This uneven skill distribution highlights the importance of recognising individual strengths and providing tailored support, rather than making assumptions based on a single trait or diagnosis.
Neurodivergence encompasses conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and others, but it also recognises the individuality of each person’s cognitive profile.
